Yüzyıllar boyunca, kale ve daha
sonra düklerinin
ve büyük düklerinin eviydi. Günümüzde kalenin bir kısmı
tarafından
kullanılmaktadır. Kalenin geriye kalan kısmı ise turistlere açıktır.
"Kuzeyin " olarak
adlandırılan kalenin büyük bir kısmı ünlü tarihçi mimar olan , , ve 'in işbirliğiyle 1845 ve
1857 yılları arasında inşa edilmiştir. Kale, aynı zamanda Avrupa'daki
Romantik en önemli
eserlerinden biri olarak kabul edilir.
